PANCHAKARMA

The word Panchakarma denotes the ‘five treatments’ and they are vamana( Emesis), Virechana (Purgation), Vasthi (Enema) , Nasya (Nasal medications) and Rakthamokshana. The five procedures translated as Emesis, purgation etc in English itself is a misleading point for ayurveda. The word emesis just conveys a message that it is a procedure of vomiting but vamana means much more than this. It is not a simple vomiting treatment that can happen on one day. It involves a lot more of preparation and concept behind it.
A classical Panchakarma treatment will have three stages like Purvakarma, Pradhanakarma and PaschatKarma..
Poorvakarma is a preparatory phase of the treatment which will invariably involve oleation and sudation..
Oleation which is called as snehana is a method by which unctuous substances like oil, ghee etc will be administered to the body, either internally/ orally which is called snehapana or administered externally on the skin which is called as Abyanga (oil massage) Sudation which is called as swedana is a method by which the body is made to sweat. This is achieved by introducing hot substances to the body by fomentation with various medicated bundles or other substances like steam, medicated powders, warm medicated oils etc. The very common swedana treatments are Elakkizhi, Podikizhi, Navarakizhi, Pizhichil, Bhaspasweda, Udwarthanam etc.( Please go to “general information about treatments” under “ information to patients” to get a basic idea about treatments..
These purvakarma treatments will make the doshas loose and mobile so that they are expelled out effectively during Pradhanakarma and in addition to this the purvakarma treatments have shamana(palliative) effect also.
PradhanaKarma
Execution of the five procedures namely Vamana, virechana, vasthi, Nasya and Rakthamokshana is considered as the main phase during pachakarma and hence is called pradhana Karma. There is no hard and fast rule that we should execute all five procedures in a single patient in one course of treatment. Based on the medical condition of the patient, we select one on the five procedures in a course of treatment and sometimes if the condition demands, we execute two. As per the shastra it takes nearly 368 days to execute all five treatments in one individual but unfortunately there are various commercial places where they do panchakarma in 5 days also.
Paschat Karma
After the main procedures, the body will be tender and we need to bring it back to normalcy will proper diet and other regimens and this is called and Paschatkarma.
This Poorva. Pradhana and Paschatkarma together is called as panchakarma.
